An inquiry into the affinities and tensions between Romanticism, Late Romanticism, Modernism, and Postmodernism. What constitutes the new? What is our relationship to tradition? Does art bind us to or divide us from the objects of our passion, love, and belief? Six poets to be chosen from the following: Whitman, Dickinson, Hardy, Hopkins, Yeats, Frost, Eliot, Moore, Stevens, L. Hughes, Auden, Bishop, Larkin, Plath, Ashbery, Graham, Gluck, Bidart, Komunyahaa.

Prerequisites: two 200-level literature courses.
