HISP 405 - The New Spaniards: Immigration in Contemporary SpainFC ARHU CD WADV 4 credits With a foreign-born population that accounts for more than 14% of its total, Spain has the highest level of immigration in the Spanish-speaking world, and one of the highest in Europe. This course studies the three largest immigrant groups in Spain (Latin Americans, North Africans, and Eastern Europeans), and explores how they have impacted contemporary Spanish society. Through a diverse compilation of literary novels, music, theater, journalism, and film, this course examines how these works question official discourses on national identity, immigration, and history, while addressing issues of citizenship, discrimination, social justice, and hope, among others. We will examine works by Rachid Nini, Lourdes Ortiz, Chambao, Carlos Carrión, and more. Taught in Spanish.
Prerequisites: two 300-level courses taught in Spanish. This course is appropriate for new students based on placement exam.
