HISP 465 - Indignant Spain: Politics and Culture After 2011FC ARHU CD WADV 4 credits On May 15, 2011, the year of the Arab Spring, Spaniards took to the streets demanding “Real Democracy Now.” The indignados movement, aka 15M, would lead to major shifts in the political landscape of Spain’s young democracy, spawning initiatives that sought to redefine citizens’ role in the political process and cultural production and that, in turn, helped inspire similar movements elsewhere, including Occupy Wall Street. This course investigates the evolution and legacy of 15M in Spain and abroad through fiction, journalism, feature films, and documentaries. Taught in Spanish.
Prerequisites: two 300-level courses taught in Spanish.
