FYSP 031 - Queer of Color Performance, Art, and Theory

FC ARHU CD WINT
4 credits
Queer people of color, like many marginalized groups, make art as a matter of survival. How do queer of color performance, art, activism, and theory interface? This course examines a framework of thinking called “queer of color critique,” a mode of analysis grounded in the lived experiences, struggles, and world-making of LGBTQIA+ people of color. Using the theories of queer of color critique, we will not only examine art and performance but also create performances that attend to the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, class, nation, and diaspora in our own lives. In this class, performance is not only the object of study, but also the mode of inquiry. Students will create performances as a way to better understand theory and better analyze the artwork of others. No performance experience required.
