FYSP 033 - White Coat Wonders: Examining the Medical ProfessionFC SSCI CD WINT 4 credits Physicians are perceived to be some of the most intelligent and industrious individuals. Given their status in American society, physicians are bestowed unique powers, privileges, and responsibilities. This course aims to take a close look at these white coat wonders, steering students to think critically about the medical institution while better understanding the taken-for-granted assumptions many have about physicians. The following questions are addressed: How did physicians become so highly regarded? Who is most likely to become a physician? What are the lived experiences of physicians from marginalized groups? What can we learn from non-academic representations of physicians?
