CRWR 226 - The Fairy Tale

FC ARHU WINT
4 credits
The tropes of the fairy tale have long haunted literature, suffusing everything from Victorian novels to confessional poetry to contemporary short stories. In this class, we will read multiple versions of some classic tales alongside a diverse range of contemporary authors and critical feminist, theoretical, and psychoanalytical texts. As we read, we will ask: How can we use the fairy tale and its archetypes to fertile, subversive ends in our own fiction? What can the form of the fairy tale teach us about storytelling? Students will respond critically and creatively to the readings, complete a number of short writing assignments, and workshop their own fairy tales and fairy tale-inspired work.
