ETHN 191 - AfroClassical Music Forum and PracticumFC CNDP CD 4 credits This course gives conservatory students the opportunity to workshop pieces they are planning to program by African, African American, AfroCaribbean, and AfroEuropean classical composers in a musical forum. Each student will prepare solo or collaborative work(s) to be presented in class, followed by a discussion that critically considers the historical, cultural, social, and stylistic contexts of the composition and its composer. Class discussions will be informed by supplemental readings and individual research projects that will support lecture and/or program notes for the final public performance. By the end of the course, students will have expanded their knowledge of performance practices, composers, and repertoire within the EuroAmerican art music tradition, not as isolated phenomena amongst Africana practitioners but as related nodes of expression across time and space in the Black Atlantic. Instructor consent and studio teacher permission are required.
