ENVS 180 - Introduction to Rural EnvironmentsFC SSCI 4 credits This course is a survey of current environmental and social issues related to rural spaces including demographic change and migration, patterns and processes of rural economies and resource use including landscapes of extraction, agricultural land use, exurban development, and tourism. We will interrogate the ways rural stereotypes impact the imagination for solutions to environmental problems related to rural economies and resource use. We will pay attention to how class, gender, race, and property rights impact rural quality of life. Students will consider the implications of these problems at local, regional, and global scales. We will pay close attention to the way communities negotiate tensions between economic pressures, the distribution and access to resource rights, and the impacts of climate change.
