AAST 236 - Politics and Society in Africa since the 1980sFC SSCI CD 4 credits Two momentous changes have occurred in Africa since the 1980s. The first was the shift to liberal economic reforms commonly called structural adjustment. The second was democratization. These changes, many argue, have vastly diminished the autonomy of the African state, and enabled external hegemonic powers to gain unprecedented influence in Africa since independence. This course examines the political, social, and economic implications of these changes at both local and international levels.
