This course explores the dazzling global trajectory of Marxism, focusing especially on the theoretical and political tensions that emerged from the uptake of this body of thought in markedly varied contexts around the world. We will read primary texts starting with Marx, Engels, Luxemburg, and Lenin, and then expand our range to receptions of Marxism in various parts of the Third World, focusing on the writings of Aimé Césaire, Ali Shariati, Claudia Jones, José Carlos Mariátegui and Mao Zedong among others. We will examine how Marxist categories were transformed in and through translation in their specific articulations around the world.
