MATH 328 - Computational AlgebraFC NSMA QFR 4 credits This course examines connections between the algebra and geometry of the set of solutions to a system of polynomial equations (called a variety) and the use of algorithms to effect concrete calculations. Topics studied include rings and ideals, Grobner bases, resultants and elimination theory, Hilbert’s Nullstellensatz, the correspondence between polynomial ideals and algebraic varieties, and applications of the methods to other areas of mathematics. There will be opportunities for computer experimentation and student projects. Given in alternate years. Recommended Preparation: MATH 220.
Prerequisites: MATH 231 and MATH 232.
