FCARHUCDWINT4 credits This course asks what it means to dance ‘locally’ in a global world. Through close consideration of social and theatrical dance forms, it investigates how they animate the formation of national, racial, ethnic, and gendered (post)colonial identities; chart global migration patterns; form the basis of innovative fusion styles; and complicate facile understandings of cultural ‘authenticity’ and ‘originality.’ The course will place dance at the center of our inquiry, understanding it as a rich site of cultural negotiation, contestation, and exchange uniquely privileged to shed light on ongoing globalization processes and the persistence of colonial configurations.
