Where does law come from? Law and society studies how law is the product of cultural meanings rather than merely their cause. Using examples from sociology, political science, anthropology, and history, we study how everyday understandings underpin and conflict with legal institutions when defining crime, marriage, and law itself. Assignments include conducting interviews about disputes, analyzing legal changes, and observing legal proceedings: the formal and informal ways law gets enacted every day. Recommended Preparation: one “Introduction to Sociology” course.
