The Enlightenment was an intellectual, social, and political movement that shaped modern life. This class will address themes such as reason, the individual, religious tolerance, ethics, equality, difference, and the role of the state. We will examine the social context that made this work possible and the contemporary reception of Enlightenment ideas. This class will finally discuss later critiques and reflections on Enlightenment values and ideas.
