From Darío in Buenos Aires and París, and Martí in exile in New York, all the way to the Mexico City megalopolis of Amores perros, the city has been a fascinating sign for “modernity” in Latin America. We will also study Borges and Garro’s imaginary cities (and García Márquez’s rural anti-city, Macondo), Vallejo and Neruda, Cortázar’s Paris, the Mexico City of Carlos Fuentes, a Havana of fantasy and ruins, the Rio de Janeiro of the favelas, and the cities of the U.S.-Mexico border. Taught in Spanish.
Prerequisites: HISP 304. This course is appropriate for new students based on placement exam.
