FC ARHU CD
4 credits
Chekhov was the son of a serf. His short and intense life is the story of a man who “drop by drop wrings the slave out of himself.” This course explores Chekhov’s search for inner freedom through his short stories, plays, and letters and through the places that shaped him: the provincial town of Taganrog where he grew up; the wide-open steppes of Southern Russia; Moscow, where he studied medicine and came of age as a writer; Sakhalin Island, where he investigated conditions in a penal colony; Yalta, where he tried to stave off the tuberculosis that eventually killed him. Reading, writing and discussions in Russian. Heritage learners and native speakers of Russian may be assigned additional text.

Prerequisites: RUSS 305 or (306 (may be taken concurrently)).
