MUSY 100 - Introduction to EthnomusicologyFC CNDP CD 4 credits Ethnomusicologists believe that by studying the music of elsewhere we can learn about the world, the people within it, and what matters to them. This class is designed to introduce you to a range of questions, skills, and approaches that concern ethnomusicologists, including ethnographic research practices, social analysis, and analyzing musical structures. We will consider historical precedents before considering the methodological and ethical concerns that currently shape the discipline, including emerging activists and decolonizing frameworks. By the end of the semester, you will have a sense of the variety of approaches to the field.
Prerequisites: ESOL 130 (for students in ESOL sequence). This course is appropriate for new students.
