MUSY 290 - Introduction to African American Music IFC CNDP DDHU CD 4 credits The first semester of a one-year survey of musical styles and forms cultivated by African Americans. First semester includes an exploration of the diversity of African musical and cultural continuities in the Americas, its influence on early African American instrumental and vocal expressions foundational to the blues aesthetic, and the sociopolitical implications of African American music and its complicated histories contributing to the establishment of the entertainment industry in the United States and abroad through the turn of the 20th century.
Prerequisites: ESOL 130 (for students in ESOL sequence). This course is cross-listed with AAST-171, JAZZ-290
