MUSY 291 - Introduction to African American Music IIFC CNDP DDHU CD 4 credits The second semester of a one-year survey of musical styles and forms cultivated by African Americans. Second semester extends the exploration of African American instrumental and vocal music and its creative practitioners within the entertainment industry against the backdrop of ongoing developments of social justice, civil rights, and spiritual movements throughout the 1900s to the present. Introductions to various African American musical traditions to be covered will include Negro Spirituals, concert/classical music by Black composers, jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, gospel, soul, funk, hip-hop, punk, country, and electronica, as well as their respective sub-genres.
Prerequisites: ESOL 130 (for students in ESOL sequence). This course is cross-listed with AAST-172, JAZZ-291
