MUSY 342 - ModernismsFC CNDP DDHU 4 credits Musicians living at the end of the 19th century in France and Germany proclaimed the rise of naturalism, impressionism, expressionism, symbolism, primitivism, Dadaism, and many more such movements. Why so many “isms”? This course will situate the large number of musical and artistic movements that proliferated in Germany and France at the end of the 19th century into their broader social, political, and philosophical contexts. Our studies will cover the music of Fauré, Debussy, Ravel, Satie, Busoni, Reger, Richard Strauss, and Mahler. This course was formerly taught under the title “Fin-de-Siècle Music in Germany and France.” Recommended Preparation: one 200-level course in music history.
Prerequisites: ESOL 130 (for students in ESOL sequence).
