PSYC 421 - Seminar in Cultural SocializationFC SSCI CD WADV 4 credits This seminar explores how American families practice cultural socialization, or teach youth about race, ethnicity, and other aspects of culture. Readings will draw from seminal and emerging research on cultural socialization in families of various ethnic/racial backgrounds and structures and will incorporate research on related topics (e.g., identity, discrimination, acculturation/enculturation). This course will emphasize an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing from multiple subfields of psychology (e.g., developmental, counseling) and other related disciplines (e.g., sociology, family science, human development). Recommended Preparation: PSYC 300.
Prerequisites: (COGS 101 or NSCI 201 or PSYC 100) and PSYC 200 and (PSYC 204 or PSYC 214 or PSYC 215 or PSYC 216 or PSYC 217).
