NSCI 125 - Neuroscience of Mental HealthFC NSMA 4 credits As is often reported in the media, mental health problems are on the rise globally. The goal of this course is to explore what is known (and unknown) about the underlying causes of a variety of mental health conditions (e.g., anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, substance use disorder). In addition, the course will explore the mechanism of action and effectiveness of a variety of “conventional” treatments for mental health conditions. Finally, we will investigate whether “pop culture” tips to improve mental health are truly as effective as they are touted to be. All scientific knowledge necessary for understanding the material in class will be included; thus, advanced scientific coursework is not required.
This course is appropriate for new students.
