ENGL 103 - Introduction to World LiteratureFC ARHU CD WINT 4 credits This course explores literatures that represent a variety of cultures beyond the Anglo-American tradition. Readings range from the 15th-century memoir of the first Mughal emperor Babur to the early 20th-century novella of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain imagining a feminist utopia. Students will be introduced to great Latin American short story writers Jorge Luis Borges and Machado de Assis, as well as to works such as Olaudah Equiano’s The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano and Alejo Carpentier’s Kingdom of This World that forge transatlantic networks. Students will therefore be able to identify the non-Western writers and global contexts that inform the literary production across different times, places, and societies.
This course is appropriate for new students.
