MATH 370 - The History of MathematicsFC NSMA QFR WADV 4 credits This course will survey the historical development of mathematics from ancient times through the end of the 19th century. Special attention will be paid to the careful reading of primary sources and the means by which mathematics, culture, and society interact. Topics covered may include number systems; Euclidean geometry; the development of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and calculus; and the evolution of the concept of rigorous proof. More modern developments will be discussed as time permits. One of the areas of emphasis of this course will be the mathematical notions of proof and rigor and their historical development. It is therefore crucial that students have a firm grounding in proof writing and mathematical logic.
Prerequisites: MATH 220.
