ENVS 303 - NomadismFC SSCI CD 4 credits This course is an overview of the wide array of ecological management strategies covered under the term “nomadism.” Nomadic pastoralists, from Siberia to the Americas and beyond, have been the subject of political repression and ethnic enmity under settler colonial projects which have sought to appropriate their traditional territories. They have also been some of the first people to have to respond to climate change at a community level. Despite the political and ecological precarity they have been exposed to, these communities continue to thrive through effective management of common resources and land stewardship. This course will examine the social, ecological, and political realities facing contemporary nomadic communities through case studies from Siberia and Inner Asia, Northern Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, the Americas, and Southeast Asia.
