Is the United States an empire? How has the United States acted imperially? This advanced seminar seeks out answers to these questions through close readings of recent historical literature on how some scholars of both the United States and other parts of the globe have responded to them. Readings will cover not just the American view but also the perspective of groups who have resisted, adapted to, and survived the effects of American imperialism. Discussions and coursework will focus on the major trends, questions, and debates in the historiography of American empire from the late 18th century to the early 21st century.
