REEE 333 - The Wondrous Writings of Mykola Hohol/Nikolai Gogol
FCARHUCDWINT4 credits A deep-dive into the luminous and bewildering works of the Ukrainian writer Mykola Hohol. As well as exploring his works as the masterpieces of world literature that they are, we will also consider the processes of empire and coloniality that led him to be known not as Mykola Hohol but as the Russianized version Nikolai Gogol. Seminar format. Taught in English, no knowledge of Russian required; students who know Russian will be encouraged to read some texts in the original.
Prerequisites: one 100- or 200-level literature course in any literary tradition.
