PNTC 401 - Piano Technology 3FC CNDP 6 credits Morning lessons start with tuning one piano in Robertson each morning, then returning to the piano shop to regulate actions and assist in rebuilding Steinway grand pianos. Students begin to learn voicing techniques for U.S.- and Hamburg-made Steinway grand pianos. Students make house calls to tune in the Oberlin community and are introduced to tuning, regulating, and easy-level voicing in classrooms and small recital hall pianos. Students must pass a series of advanced tests including tuning, regulation, center pinning, nomenclature, easy-level voicing, common repairs, and a written exam. Afternoon lessons feature advanced techniques in pinblock manufacturing, assembly, adjustment, and replacement; downbearing adjustments; bridge cap replacement; soundboard repairs and soundboard refinishing; spraying case parts and soundboards; gilding the plate; and installing agraffes and stringing.
Prerequisites: PNTC 303 and PNTC 304.
