SOCI 274 - Sociology of Immigration: On the Move in a Changing World
FCSSCICD4 credits Our current epoch of globalization is sometimes referred to as “the age of migration.” In this course, we will explore the process of migration from a sociological perspective. We will begin with a survey of some of the main theories and debates concerning the causes and consequences of migration and the diverse experiences of migrants, with an emphasis on post-1965 immigration to the United States. The second half of the course will adopt a more critical perspective examining the relationship between capitalist globalization and “forced migration,” state efforts to control the movement of people across their borders, the role of migrant and immigrant workers in the global economy, and the rise of the immigrant rights movement.
