SOCI 474 - Immigrant Rights and Capitalism: Justice for All?FC SSCI CD 4 credits This seminar will explore the struggle for migrant and immigrant justice in the United States, past and present, from a critical sociological perspective. Our readings and discussions will foreground the broader social context in which migrants and immigrants have historically fought for greater rights and freedom. To what extent have political-economic developments and state policy influenced political demands and coalition-building strategies? How has the relationship between organized labor and migrant and immigrant workers changed over time? What are some of the challenges and lines of fracture within the contemporary immigrant rights movement? And what happens when movement organizations become dependent on philanthropic foundations for funding? In grappling with these and other questions, students will also learn how to think critically about power, politics, and social change more broadly.
