HC CNDP CD
2 credits
This course is designed for percussion majors who wants to develop a deeper sense of time (groove) by learning basic hand-drumming techniques as well as specific techniques on a wide range of the most universally useful instruments in the world percussion family. The focus will be on World Musical rhythms as well as specific techniques on instruments from the Balkan countries, South India, North and West Africa, Middle East, Brazil, and the Afro Caribbean diaspora will be explored. The effect of these lessons is meant to give the student greater confidence to their personal sense of rhythm and how the specific instruments play a role in a contextual way. Upon satisfactory completion of this course the student will develop and improve their skill at internalizing a basic sense of time (rhythm). The class will explore how the split finger drum technique can be applied to many styles of drumming and percussion instruments. In class we will watch and hear audio examples of a variety of indigenous musicians from around the world and discuss those aspects of music and rhythm that transcend style on a global basis. Student must be a classical or jazz percussion major; or receive consent from the instructor.
