LING 301 - SyntaxFC SSCI QFR 4 credits This course introduces the linguistics subfield of syntax, the scientific study of the mental rules underpinning phrase and sentence structures in human language(s). Students will learn some of the foundational concepts of generative syntactic theory (especially from the Principles and Parameters framework). Careful attention will be paid to linguistic data analysis, linguistic theory-building and hypothesis-testing, and the empirical adequacy of our theoretical models will be tested against a wide range of data from English and other languages from around the world.
Prerequisites: ANTH 202.
