HIST 425 - History of Space, History of TimeFC SSCI CD WADV 4 credits The study of the past is intimately concerned with questions of time and space - how actions, events, and processes unfold across chronological duration and geographical area. But do these spatial and temporal dimensions exist prior to history, or do they themselves possess histories of their own? Do historical conjunctures produce their own times and spaces?
This advanced historiography seminar is an introduction to spatial and temporal theory in the study of the past. Through primary sources and secondary literatures (Marx, Heidegger, Benjamin, Lefebvre, Koselleck, Massey, Harvey) we will explore contemporary debates on the history of space and time.
