GERM 325 - Reproductive TalesFC ARHU CD WINT 4 credits This course focuses on the representation of reproductive issues in literature, cinema, and media. We will explore textual, cinematic, and visual narratives about reproduction-related matters: fertility, infertility, motherhood, contraception, abortion, miscarriage, loss of a child, adoption. Examining fictional and non-fictional works that deal with reproduction, we will address the issues of trauma and vulnerability, health inequities, discrimination, and reproductive justice. We will analyze how the narratives on reproduction change over time, and the role of law, state, religion, and ideology in establishing specific narratives. While our main focus will be on the narratives from the German-speaking countries in the 20th and 21st centuries, we will also explore these works’ relevance to other countries and epochs. Prerequisite: one literature course OR one cinema course (any country, any time period). Readings, subtitles, and discussion in English.
Prerequisites: one literature course (any level, any language) OR one cinema course (any level, any language). This course is cross-listed with GSFS-325
