FOOD 200 - Lorain County Foodways

FC ARHU CD
4 credits
According to John T. Edge, the term “foodways” describes “the study of what we eat, as well as how and why and under what circumstances we eat”, and Carole Counihan adds that the term considers “the beliefs and behaviour surrounding the production, distribution, and consumption of food.” In Lorain County Foodways, students will explore the food culture of Lorain County through hands-on community engagement, oral history projects, and digital storytelling. This course provides an opportunity to work with local community partners, and document the culinary heritage of the region. Students will practice ethnographic research methods, particularly by creating oral histories, and students will document and present their research using multimodal mediums, including digital portfolios. Students will develop an understanding of Lorain County foodways while understanding what it might mean to positively impact the community.
