CLAS 247 - Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic World
FCSSCICD4 credits Since his legendary campaigns in the 4th century BCE, Alexander the Great has captivated students, politicians, movie producers, and everyone in between. Crossing Greece, Egypt, Asia, and India, Alexander founded cities, revolutionized militaries, and sowed the seeds of some of history’s largest empires, actions which would impact the fate of the ancient world for centuries to come. This course will take students through the life and exploits of Alexander and his famous successors, and introduce them to the rich political, military, religious, and cultural history of the Hellenistic world, which spans from Alexander to the rise of the Roman Empire. Students in this course will be introduced to a range of ancient texts and archaeological artifacts – from temples to sculptures to ceramics – and will use this ancient evidence to explore the Hellenistic period and to learn about the communities that lived through it. Recommended Preparation: CLAS 103 or HIST 130.
