FCSSCICD4 credits This course explores the rise of Vladimir Putin and his continued hold on power in Russia, as well as the politics of other post-Soviet states. It will begin by investigating the impact of the Soviet past: the Russian revolution, Stalinism, the Soviet political system, Gorbachev’s perestroika and the Soviet collapse. Much of the course will focus on Russia’s fraught attempts to implement democracy alongside capitalism, and the conflicts that has generated in the post-Soviet region. Not open to students who have taken POLT 260.
