GERM 345 - From Apfelstrudel to Zwiebelkuchen: Food, Culture, and Belonging in Germany and BeyondFC ARHU CD 4 credits Yes, we will cook and eat. Yes, you are welcome to share your Oma’s favorite recipe. And if your Oma isn’t German, you can share hers, too. Ja, auf Deutsch! This course examines the food of German-speaking countries from a cultural perspective. We will look at the regional differences and international influences, explore food as a marker of identity and a source of artistic imagination; discuss the role of food in politics and warfare, and address the historical roots of such trends as German vegetarianism and urban gardening. Sources include literary works, cookbooks, visual artworks, films and other media. Taught in German.
Prerequisites: GERM 204 or concurrent enrollment in GERM 204 or placement test (200-level equivalent and higher).
