ENGL 208 - Diaspora StoriesHC ARHU CD WADV 2 credits This course examines three distinct diasporic communities in the USA as students explore the intertwined stories of the Cuban Americans, Palestinian Americans and Bangladeshi Americans. These stories will be explored through novels including Cristina Garcia’s Dreaming in Cuban (1992), Tanwi Nandini Islam’s Bright Lines: A Novel (2015) and Sahar Mustafah’s Beauty of Your Face: A Novel (2020). Reading the novels will contribute to the understanding of the diasporic identities, as they negotiate their Americanness by navigating the discourses on race, class, religion, gender, and sexuality. The course also seeks to navigate broader identity markers such as Latinx, Arab American, and South Asian identities by engaging a range of critical works that illuminate a nuanced understanding of the diaspora.
This course is appropriate for new students.
