ARTH 920 - Geoasthetics: Art, Geosciences, and Earthly MatterFC ARHU 4 credits Where did artists from the past get their materials-stone, wood, clay, pigments, etc.-and how are their understandings about materials different from ours today? What would it mean for us to consider the vitality of matter as agents in works of art and in our understanding of the world? We will explore the entanglements of matter (the earth’s physical substances) and the materials of art and architecture in examples from ancient through contemporary times. We will consider understandings of matter different from ours today.
