FYSP 174 - Is Another World Possible? Utopianism and its DiscontentsFC ARHU WINT 4 credits Since the publication of Thomas More’s Utopia in 1516, visions of alternative worlds have inspired ideas of human flourishing and bold experiments in collective life. These visions-expressed in utopian communities, literature, and political thought-have in turn posed fundamental questions concerning freedom, social justice, and the perfectibility of human institutions. Is another world possible? Or do all efforts to realize an ideal society end in dystopian nightmare? This seminar considers such questions through a broad range of sources and historical sites, including religious millenarian communities, socialist and anarchist political theory, Black utopian aesthetics, and contemporary feminism and environmentalism.
