EAST 115 - Premodern Japanese LiteratureFC ARHU CD 4 credits This course introduces premodern Japanese literature following a roughly chronological order from the 8th century to the 19th century. We will explore the rich genres of premodern Japanese literature, such as mythology and poetry, court romance and military tales, fiction, and drama. Through close analysis of the literary works and their social and cultural contexts, we will discuss themes including but not limited to sacred and profane, gender and writing women, desire and sexuality, violence and order, print and performance, intertextuality, and intermediality.
