SOCI 212 - Foundations of Criminology

FC SSCI
4 credits
This course introduces criminological theories ranging from early 19th century proto-criminological theory, to early foundational criminological theories including Differential Association, Social Disorganization, and Strain theories, to contemporary mainstream theories including Self-Control, Life Course, and General Strain. We then cover the “critical turn” in criminology. We will also analyze the potential value and negative consequences of biological theories of criminality. Discussion includes examination of the value and limitations of theories given 1) taken-for-granted definitions of “crime” and criminal justice system practices, 2) perpetuation of bias in criminalization, policing, arrest, and incarceration, and 3) understandings of crime, criminalization, and victimization that account for structural inequalities. This course also assesses the value, challenges, and pitfalls of criminological research methods. Students will apply criminological theories to one type of crime (e.g., white collar) for how they account for individual-, neighborhood-, and society-level factors.

This course is appropriate for new students.
