SOCI 128 - Introduction to Sociology: Thinking SociologicallyFC SSCI CD 4 credits In this course, you will learn to “think sociologically” and gain an understanding of how this perspective differs from other ways of seeing the world. We will first examine what Sociology is as a discipline, what sociologists do, and what methodologies they employ. Moving forward, we apply sociological thinking to empirical research, concentrating on various dimensions of inequality such as race, ethnicity, gender, class, and environmental factors. Finally, we explore the significant role that social institutions and processes play in mediating relations between individuals and the larger society. Throughout the course, students will critically analyze their familiar social environments with skepticism and reflexivity, while also gaining familiarity with fundamental concepts and theories in sociology.
This course is appropriate for new students.
