SOCI 228 - Global Perspectives on Race & RacismFC SSCI CD 4 credits This course explores and compares how race, ethnicity, and racism function within diverse societies. We will examine various contexts, including Apartheid-era South Africa, the Jim Crow era in the United States, and contemporary issues such as the prevalence of colorblindness and anti-racialism in Europe, the challenge of colorism in Latin America, and the complex relationship between skin color and the ideals of Asian beauty within Asia. Throughout the course, students will reflect on how different classifications and measurements of race, ethnicity, and skin color can profoundly impact individuals’ life chances within their respective societies, and how these localized racial practices contribute to global racial dynamics.
