FCARHUCD4 credits What happens when we die? While this course cannot provide an answer, students will survey a wide range of beliefs and rituals relating to death and the afterlife. It will use religious, philosophical, and literary texts as well as art and architecture to explore burial customs, mesmerizing visionary tours of heaven and hell, competing views on the soul, and ideas about reincarnation, immortality, and resurrection. Sources range from the Epic of Gilgamesh to Dante, with emphasis on ancient Judaism, early Christianity, and Greco-Roman philosophy.
