ENVS 206 - Global Environmental HistoryFC SSCI CD 4 credits This course explores the changing relationship between society and the environment, with an emphasis on how understanding environmental history can help mitigate our ongoing and escalating environmental crises. We will learn how attitudes towards nature evolved alongside changing social, cultural, political and economic conditions. The course will analyze the environmental dimensions of the rise and fall of empires and nation-states, the global expansion of capitalism and industrialization, and changes in the abundance of natural resources. We will consider how we have altered our environments and examine the consequences of these transformations for non-human nature and human communities around the world.
