HIST 294 - Environmental History of ChinaFC SSCI CD 4 credits Why are there significantly fewer elephants in China today than in the 19th century? How and when did anthropogenic forests replace many natural forests in South China? Why was the Yellow River such a big problem throughout Chinese history? This course offers an environmental perspective on the history of China, a densely populated region with high biodiversity and various landscapes. It provides a unique opportunity for students to consider the relationship between human activities and the environment in the context of China, to make comparisons with regions beyond China, and to forge connections with contemporary issues such as sustainability, climate change, and land degradation.
This course is appropriate for new students.
