ENGL 212 - African American Poetry SurveyFC ARHU CD 4 credits This course offers students a long introductory view of African American poetic traditions: from Phillis Wheatley, through the Harlem Renaissance and Black Arts Movement, to Tracy K. Smith. Along this way, we will be especially attentive to recurring, culturally “saturated” images and sound patterns, as well as innovations in orthography (the writing on the page) and subject focal points. For final projects, students will choose one poet to study in depth and to report their readings to the class.
This course is appropriate for new students.
