EAST 210 - Japan’s Film and Modern LiteratureFC ARHU CD 4 credits This course introduces influential literary and cinematic currents in Japan from the silent film to animation, poetry to prose fiction. We will consider works by the writers, Murakami, Ichiyo, Tanizaki, and Soseki, as well as those by filmmakers like Ozu, Kurosawa, and Mizoguchi. We will explore the specific nature of film and literature as expressive media, arts in cultural and social histories, and topics of gender, aesthetics, war, and nationalism. The course is designed for students interested in broadening their knowledge of Japan, as well as for students with a comparative perspective on other literary and cinematic cultures. Taught in English.
